NOC 3Is

This February, the LIP DataCenter at 3Is in Lisbon started operations. This infrastructure currently houses the LIP backup system in Lisbon, as well as support services for the building’s network.

The use of the DataCenter in Reitoria and of the INCD infrastructure is maintained for general IT services and computing and data services.

Funding opportunities

FTC calls are ongoing (CEECs and PTDC). ERC was delayed but should be about to start. Latest predictions for the starting grant: from about NOW to April 8, to be confirmed…

The Starting Grant call should open any day now: on 22 Feb it was scheduled to open on 25 Feb (it didn’t) and close on 8 April. The Consolidator Grant call should open on 11 March 2021. The advice is: “We expect considerable continuity compared to previous calls, so we encourage applicants to prepare their proposals”.

Info on open or expected calls is provided here. A dedicated webpage with more complete information on funding opportunities will soon be created on the LIP public website and linked in this newsletter.

Scientific Council news

A collection of recent information and documents: research line strategy discussion, minutes of the plenary and C4 meetings, Advisory board, PTDC reviews…

Research line strategy discussion

Minutes and documents (C4 in Portuguese)

PTDC reviews

  • The directorate asked for the help of the SC board to identify researchers to help on the revision of LIP’s applications to the PTDC call. Each PTDC should receive comments from two persons: one of the directors and another senior researcher.

2021 meeting with LIP’s international Advisory Board

  • The meeting will be held (most probably only remotely) on April 29th and 30th

Associate Laboratories call

The results were made public by FCT on February 24th. All the 26 LAs were renovated (with the 2019 level of funding) and 14 new were created. LIP’s rating is clearly below expectations.

  • The individual evaluation reports can be found here
  • The results can be found here (excel file)

In conclusion, LIP keeps the status of Associate Laboratory, and roughly the 2019 level of funding. However, the rating is clearly below expectations. In the coming days the directorate will submit their comments to FCT in the hope not of greater funding but of a fairer classification.

Below you can find LIP’s application documentation and on the timeline of the call:

  • 28 Sep 2020 Opening of the call
  • 29 Oct 2020 Deadline for the application submission (see LIP’s application document)
  • 10 Dec 2020 LIP’s public presentation (see LIP’s presentation slides and video recording)
  • 9 Jan 2021 Deadline to reply to the panel’s clarification request
  • 24 Feb 2021 Announcement of the results

New public WordPress pages

A new structure able to host web pages autonomously managed by the owners is now available. This has been a long-standing request.

For long, groups, projects and even individual researchers at LIP felt the need for public web pages that could be fully controlled by their owners, without the need for the intervention of the LIP webmaster. This issue is finally solved.

The get a page or ask for further information please contact webapps@lip.pt

As an example, the Auger group has this new public WordPress web page in which all the editing can be done autonomously by the group. This page can be accessed from the group’s institutional LIP page. For examples of autonomous project pages see LouMu or RD51. You can then link this pages wherever you like.
