On September 16th and 17th, Prof. Pedro Assis and Gonçalo Ribeiro represented the FLASHGuard Project in Barcelona at the official kick-off of the CaixaImpulse Health Innovation Grant. The event marked the beginning of the program and included the first week of business training, bringing together selected projects from across Portugal and Spain.

Being part of this highly competitive initiative, with a success rate of only 6.7%, is a major milestone for FLASHGuard and reinforces our mission to translate cutting-edge physics into medicine.

FLASHGuard Project awarded CaixaImpulse Health Innovation Grant

FLASHGuard Project

Another milestone for FLASHGuard: the project has been awarded the CaixaImpulse Health Innovation Grant 🎉 This is one of the most competitive programs in Iberia, with a success rate of only 6.7%, and applications are restricted to excellent research centers in Portugal and Spain.

The grant includes an initial €50,000 and provides a pathway to securing up to €700,000 over five years, distributed across three stages. Beyond funding, it offers 5 hours of mentoring, 10 hours of expert advice with top specialists from the “la Caixa” Foundation network, and four weeks of business training.

New Students

Maria Eduarda Fidalgo, Carlota Pataca, and Francisco Cavaco, Engineering Physics students at Instituto Superior Técnico, have joined FLASHGuard to develop their bachelor’s theses. FLASHGuard Project Presented at XXII Seminar on Software in Alghero, Italy

FLASHGuard Alghero Presentation

Gonçalo Ribeiro presented the FLASHGuard Project at the XXII Seminar on Software for Nuclear, Subnuclear and Applied Physics in Alghero, Italy as a grant awardee. Carolina Miranda also attended this summer school. The event combined technical presentations with a scientific school featuring a full course on the Geant4 simulation toolkit, a Machine Learning fundamentals course, and seminars on the latest developments in particle accelerators.

This work has been carried out within the framework of the COST Action CA21128- PROBONO “PROton BOron Nuclear fusion: from energy production to medical applications”, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology - www.cost.eu).

BoneOscopy Project Launches at LIP

On January 1, 2025, LIP officially joined the European BoneOscopy consortium, a five-year Horizon Europe project aiming to transform the treatment of bone cancer. The project unites multidisciplinary expertise to develop the first technology capable of daily tumour and calcium monitoring during particle beam therapy — without additional radiation exposure. At LIP, researchers including Pedro Assis, Rute Pedro, and Bernardo Tomé will lead the development of advanced detectors, fast electronics, and simulations essential for enabling more personalised and precise treatments.
