9th Mini-School on Particle and Astroparticle Physics

The mini-school on Particle and Astroparticle Physics, organized jointly by CFTP (Centro de Física Teorica de Particulas) and LIP (Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas), provides undergraduate students with an overview of the field, covering both theoretical and experimental aspects.

The school is primarily aimed at third-year undergraduate physics students and will be held fully in in-person mode in Oeiras (Lisbon, Portugal), from the 5th to the 6th of February, 2024.

In the first day there will be introductory lectures on different topics. The second day will consist of hands-on tutorials (morning) and a session in which research opportunities will be presented to the participants by CFTP and LIP researchers (afternoon). MSc and PhD students from both research centres will present posters on their current research work. This will be an oportunity for the undergraduate students to exchange views with more advanced colleagues.

The deadline for (regular) registration is January 25, 2024. The deadline for registration requesting a grant is January 15, 2024.

Several of our members will participate in this school: Liliana Apolinario and Dario Vaccaro will present a hands-on tutorial on QCD jets, Grigorios Chachamis will deliver a lecture on phenomenology, and Pablo Guerrero will discuss research opportunities within the Pheno group.

Midsummer School in QCD 2024

An illuminating exploration into QCD theory, phenomenology, and experiments amidst the vibrant Nordic summer nights. This comprehensive two-week program will take place in Saariselkä (Finland) from the 24th of June to the 6th of July. Its first week will be dedicated to theory, followed by the second week, delving into phenomenology and experiments.

Proposed topics:

  • Perturbative QCD: hard and high energy processes
  • Small x physics and saturation
  • Algorithms: jets, particle flow, machine learning
  • Event generators
  • Experiments and detectors: LHC, EIC and cosmic rays

The program will also include several hands-on parts with practical exercises using CMS Open Data, MC generators, and Machine Learning. The exact offering will be defined closer to the date.

The inclusive price for the school will be 1700 Euros and will include all lectures, coffee breaks, lodging (in a shared room), all breakfasts, lunches and dinners as well as the tour on Sunday.

The deadline for registration is January 31, 2024.
